Bladder and bowel concerns in children can affect far more than physical health — they can impact a child's confidence, school life, friendships, and the whole family's day-to-day. Our paediatric continence physiotherapists provide compassionate, evidence-based care to help children in Adelaide develop healthy bladder and bowel habits, while supporting families with clear guidance at every stage.

Is Paediatric Continence Physiotherapy Right for My Child?

Bladder and Bowel Conditions We Treat

  • Daytime urinary incontinence (daytime wetting)

  • Bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis)

  • Faecal incontinence (soiling)

  • Constipation and stool withholding

  • Continued use of nappies for defecation, despite successful bladder toilet training

  • Urinary urgency and frequency

  • Dysfunctional bladder or bowel habits

  • Toilet training difficulties

  • Giggle incontinence

If your child is experiencing daytime accidents, constipation, stool withholding, faecal smearing, frequent toileting, urgency, or other bladder and bowel concerns, paediatric continence physiotherapy may be able to help.

Though these issues are common, early intervention can improve bladder and bowel function, build a child's confidence, reduce stress for the family, and support healthy toileting habits that last.

What to Expect at Your Child's Appointment

Initial appointment.

Your child's first appointment is a telehealth session with parents only, focused on understanding the full picture. We discuss your child's current bladder and bowel habits, medical and developmental history, eating and drinking patterns, toileting routines, and any concerns you or your child may have.

In-person review.

We then arrange an in-person session at our Norwood clinic to meet your child and begin building the trusting therapeutic relationship that underpins effective care in this area. Assessment is completely non-invasive and tailored to your child's age and presentation. We may use real-time ultrasound at the lower abdomen to assess bladder emptying, constipation, and pelvic floor muscle function — this is painless and optional. We generally do not perform pelvic floor examinations with paediatric patients.

Appointments use age-appropriate resources, play-based activities, and visual aids to help children feel comfortable, engaged, and confident throughout their care.

A Collaborative Approach to Your Child's Care

Bladder and bowel concerns often benefit from input across a child's broader care team. With your consent, we may work alongside your GP, paediatrician, occupational therapist, or other healthcare providers to ensure your child receives coordinated, consistent care.
